Thank a Veteran Today

Myrtle Beach condo rentalsWhat we know as Veterans Day, was formerly known as Armistice Day, and was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

After having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans” in 1954. With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954 the date of Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law that returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11. [Shared from military.com]

Have a Safe Halloween

Myrtle Beach condo rentalsWith Halloween here it’s important to be safe when driving to and from your Myrtle Beach condo rentals. There are many people out, children and adults too, in costumes that could impair their vision. It’s up to drivers to be on the look out for them on every street. It’s a good night to settle into your Myrtle Beach condo rentals and just stay put for the evening; or walk where you want to go! That way everyone stays safe.

Many people no longer go trick-or-treating door to door due to safety issues. This is why places like Barefoot Landing put on special events for the kids where they can dress up and experience the holiday is a safe environment. Below are a couple activities your kids are sure to love – even the kid in you!

Come enjoy Halloween Trick or Treating at Barefoot Landing on Monday, October 31 2011, 5 - 7 p.m. Dress up the kids and bring them out to enjoy the sights, sounds, and safety of trick or treating at Barefoot Landing. Bring the family to shop, eat and enjoy!

It’s an annual Murrells Inlet tradition — Halloween on the Marshwalk. Children are invited to trick-or-treat along the Marshwalk at Murrells Inlet on Monday, October 31, from 5 – 6 pm. The Children’s Costume Contest winners will be announced at 6:00 pm. Later in the evening, the adult fun begins, as the costumed marauders prowl the Marshwalk. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Inquire at any of the Marshwalk Restaurants.

Fishing From Surfside Pier

Myrtle Beach condo rentalsSome of the best fishing can be had from Surfside Pier, just north of Murrells Inlet. At 800 feet it is one of the longest fishing piers in the state of South Carolina. Open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, it’s lighted for night fishing. Surfside Pier rents rod and reel, sells bait, and charges to fish off the pier. We have plenty of Myrtle Beach condo rentals that are a close distance to Surfside Pier and unlike in a hotel room, you’ll be able to cook your day’s catch in your own well-equipped kitchen.

Out on the far end of the pier, where the water runs deep, many people fish with big rods and reels and often will land spectacular catches. The record off the pier was a 128 lb. tarpon. The pier is full of surprise catches though. You’ll see sand sharks, hammerheads, blowfish, and often a sheepshead the size of a large dog. If you’re lucky you’ll get to catch sight of a sea robin – it has wings like a bat and a face like a catfish.

If this is your first time fishing from Surfside Pier, you will find the locals to be very friendly and quite knowledgeable. Anything you want to know about fishing they can tell you. Take advantage of it and they’ll show you where to catch some impressive sized fish.

When day is done and it’s time to kick back in one of our Myrtle Beach condo rentals, you’ll be glad you took our advice and took advantage of the Myrtle Beach condo rentals we had available for you.
